Latvia Residence Permit by Investment in Company Capital

A residence permit for an investor who puts at least €50,000 into the capital of a small or medium-sized Latvian company. Under the new law the status is issued for up to 2 years and can be renewed, and your family applies together with you.

Entrepreneurs

A Latvia residence permit by investment in company capital goes to a foreigner who has invested at least €50,000 in a local company. The company must be small, with up to 50 employees and turnover or a balance sheet of up to €10 million, and the investment has to work: the company pays at least €40,000 a year in taxes to the Latvian budget. A separate state fee of €10,000 applies. Under the new Immigration Law, in force since 15 September 2026, the permit is issued for up to 2 years and then renewed if the conditions are met. A spouse and minor children can get status together with the main applicant.

You can invest when setting up a new company or by increasing the capital of an existing one. The main work is proving the origin of the money and structuring the company so that the tax condition is met year after year.

This basis is closed to citizens of Russia and Belarus under the Immigration Law in force since 15 September 2026. We check your eligibility before you invest.

Timelines are approximate: government agencies, consulates and banks set them.

What to watch out for

  • If the company pays less tax than required, renewing the permit becomes a problem
  • Weak proof of the origin of funds is a common cause of extra requests and delays
  • A bank may take a long time to vet a non-resident when opening the company account, so we plan for it
  • The Latvian government can suspend issuing these permits to citizens of particular countries for up to 5 years

FAQ

How much does it cost?

Our service fee is on request. Government fees, translations, insurance and other mandatory costs are paid separately; we send the full estimate before you sign.

How much do I need to invest for a Latvia residence permit by investment?

At least €50,000 in the capital of a company with no more than 50 employees and turnover or a balance sheet of up to €10 million; for larger companies, from €100,000. A separate €10,000 goes to the state budget, and the company itself must pay at least €40,000 in taxes a year, or €100,000 for a large company. Add translations, insurance and company maintenance. We calculate the full budget for your situation during the consultation.

Can I invest in a company that is already operating?

Yes, by increasing its share capital: the law counts an investment made when a new company is created or when an existing company's capital is increased, and the company must meet the criteria on staff numbers and turnover. Before the deal, check the company's accounts and tax history: if it cannot pay the required taxes, your renewal will suffer.

How long is the permit issued for, and what about my family?

Under the new law, for up to 2 years, after which the status is renewed as long as the conditions are met. If you have lived in Latvia on this basis for 5 years and renew again, a further €2,000 is paid to the budget. A spouse and minor children can get status together with the investor for the same period. They need marriage and birth certificates with an apostille and translation, plus insurance for each person.

Who cannot apply on this basis?

Under the Immigration Law in force since 15 September 2026, citizens of Russia and Belarus may not apply for a residence permit through investment in company capital. The government can also suspend these permits for citizens of other specific countries for up to 5 years. Before any investment, we check your case and tell you plainly if the basis is not open to you.

How long does the process take?

Registering the company and collecting documents usually takes several weeks. By law the immigration office responds within 30 days of accepting all documents and can extend this to 4 months if there are objective reasons. We can be more precise once we have reviewed your case.

Do my documents need to be translated into Latvian?

For the first application, documents can be submitted in Latvian or English; for renewals, only in Latvian. Documents in other languages are translated and certified. Certificates from countries outside the EU usually need an apostille. We arrange translations and legalization ourselves so names and dates match across all documents.

Do you guarantee the result?

No. Decisions are made by government agencies, consulates and banks. We are responsible for preparing and checking documents, filing and support, and we tell you about the risks upfront.
